Hi Folks, Fall fly fishing is in full swing. You can feel the chill in the air and we have had several frosts. The leaves look prettier by the day. Our river levels are low and we really need rain. Fortunately, the cool nights have keep water temperatures suppressed. My focus has been trout fishing the last few weeks. Mixing it up between the bigger rivers and small streams. The water temperature has ranged between 59 and 63 degrees in our bigger rivers. The small streams I have been walking have been a little cooler with water temperatures between 56 and 60 degrees. Most of the trout landed on guided trips recently have fallen victim to a dry fly. I have located some wild rainbow trout that eat off the top in the afternoon, sipping tiny #20-#22 BWOs and #18-#20 micro caddis. Blind fishing to suspected holding areas have also prompted trout to the surface. With the low clear water, we have been casting longer leaders in the 10’-12’ range. Fly patterns used: #18-#22 Adam’s parachute, #18-#20 x-caddis, #16-#20 foam ant, #14-#16 purple parachute, #18 Lawson’s crippled mayfly, #14 GFA, #14-#18 peacock soft hackle, and a #16-#18 olive and tan caddis pupa.
