Hi Folks, in my opinion the month of June is the finest month of the year to fly fish for Vermont river trout. Our river levels have come down after a really wet May and early June. Water temperatures are perfect ranging from 56 degrees to 62 degrees. Lots of bugs currently hatching. Big Sulphurs, Little Sulphurs, Brown Drakes, Tan Caddis, Olive Caddis, and BWOs. The best time to trout fish currently is dusk and mornings can be very productive. Fly patterns I have been using are #12-#16 Rusty spinners, #14 Goddard caddis, #14-#16 Compara Duns, Sparkle Duns, and Crippled mayfly’s, #12-#16 Adam’s parachutes, #12-#16 pheasant tails, flashback pheasant tails, #14 copper John’s, #16 olive and tan wire Caddis, #14-#16 slaughter Caddis in olive and tan, #14 peacock soft hackles, #12-#14 red thread tungsten prince nymph, and #10 olive, black, and white wooly buggers.
It is a great time to be on the water. With higher than average flows, find the soft water. Trout are energy efficient creatures. I am currently offering walk and wade trips as well as float boat trips. Whether you are new to fly fishing or have been casting a fly for a while, let’s go fishing! Remember to clean your gear and keep the non-native species at home. Have Fun, Willy
